CAP 9001 DOING THE JOB FOR RICHARD MINGAY - DAIRY FARMER

“CAP9001 dries off slower than other varieties which is ideal, as I prefer the silage to be slightly green when I harvest”, says Mingay. He also finds his cattle prefer the more moist texture of Capstone Seeds white maize.

The Mingays have planted around 300 hectares of silage maize on their two dairy farms in the Franklin area of KZN.

Richard has moved to maize silage due to unfavourable weather conditions. He finds maize silage improves his feeding programme during dry spells and creates a continuity of food over a twelve-month period for milk production.

Richard splits his maize varieties with 50% Capstone Seed White Hybrid Maize, CAP 9001 and the other half with a round-up ready variety. He has used this method for two primary reasons. CAP 9001 is 40% less expensive and production is good.

Capstone Seed provides a wide range of yellow and white hybrid maize with quick, medium and long type varieties available for silage production. Click here to view our other maize varieties.
